The Canopy Collective
We are thrilled to share the launch of The Canopy Collective, a collaboration that has been six months in the making between Velos Youth, Action for Women, and Mazí Housing - with a shared vision rooted in values of safeguarding, inclusion, and giving young people (aged 18-30) a meaningful role in shaping a more just and equitable society.
The Collective's vision is to become the leading provider of holistic services for young refugees in Athens, creating a supportive community that places their needs and wellbeing at the forefront. At the heart of The Canopy Collective is a holistic integration program that prioritises their wellbeing and individual needs.
This is our collective response to the growing gaps in services for young refugees and asylum seekers in Athens
At the heart of The Canopy Collective is a holistic program that prioritises the wellbeing and individual needs of young refugees and asylum seekers aged 18-30 through all three organisation's available resources, where each response is person-centered and flexible, adapting to the evolving needs of the young people we support.
We ensure young people are:
Provided with safe and stable housing
Supported with high-quality legal representation to attain asylum status and claim their rights
Connected to non-exploitative employment, education and language learning opportunities
Guided to open bank accounts and navigate Greek bureaucracy
Supported in building psychosocial wellbeing, identity and self-esteem through gender-specific safe spaces and recreational activities
With Action for Women's experience in working with women of all ages, we are aware of the unique challenges faced by young refugee girls who are extra vulnerable to exploitation, early marriage, and trafficking - and are often deprived of equal access to education and opportunities. Supporting their safety, education, and mental health is not just essential for their personal growth but for breaking the cycle of gender inequality and empowering them to become agents of change in their communities.
Ultimately, the Collective hopes to provide a supportive community that places the needs and wellbeing of the youths at the forefront. We aim to amplify their voices, equipping them to become active agents of change in their communities and the broader policy landscape.
