Wanted: Greek Teacher
Athens | 30 hours per week | One-year fixed-term contract
We are looking for an experienced Greek teacher to join our all-women team at The Pomegranate Project in Athens.
For us, learning Greek is not simply about vocabulary and grammar. It can mean being able to speak to a doctor, understand a child's school notice, apply for work, navigate public services, advocate for yourself , and feel more at home in the place where you live.
You will teach beginner and intermediate Greek to women from refugee, migrant and undocumented backgrounds, including women with limited literacy or disrupted formal education.
Our classes are small: a maximum of 10 students, and teaching is practical, interactive and rooted in everyday life. We are looking for someone who combines strong teaching practice with creativity, consistency, patience and the ability to meet women where they are.
Where & When
Location: Kypseli, Athens
Contract: One-year fixed-term paid employment contract, with the possibility of renewal subject to program needs, performance and funding
Desired start date:7 September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter
Hours:30 hours per week, including teaching, lesson preparation and administration
Working days: Monday to Thursday
Evening teaching: this 30-hour position includes two evening sessions per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:30 until 20:30
Please read the schedule carefully before applying. Availability for the full working schedule, including both weekly evening sessions, is an essential requirement for applicants seeking the 30-hour position.
Can't do 30 hours but can teach evenings?
We would still like to hear from you!
We are also accepting applications from qualified Greek teachers who are interested specifically in evening teaching hours.
If you cannot commit to the full 30-hour position but can reliably teach our evening classes, please state this clearly in your application and tell us your availability.
Evening-only applicants will be considered separately from candidates for the 30-hour role.

Support students preparing for recognised Greek-language proficiency examinations where relevant.
Collaborate closely with AFW's social workers, interpreters and wider multidisciplinary team.

Training or experience in trauma-informed education.
Certification or eligibility for adult-educator accreditation through EOPPEP.

The Classroom
There is no single AFW student. Some of the women we work with already speak several languages. Others may be learning to read and write confidently for the first time. Some are preparing for employment or language examinations; others want to speak to their child's teacher, understand a government letter or stop depending on someone else to translate their lives.
You will be a good fit at AFW if you can see those differences and builds from them. We are looking for someone who is curious about what works, willing to change course when something doesn't, and capable of creating a classroom where learning is taken seriously without losing warmth, humour or humanity.
Continuity matters. Our students build relationships of trust with their teachers, so we are looking for someone who can genuinely commit to the agreed working schedule and the full one-year contract.
🌈 Inclusivity & Belonging
AFW is committed to equal opportunity and welcomes applications from people of diverse backgrounds. The Pomegranate Project is a women-only space, and safeguarding, safety and the needs of the women we support are central to our recruitment.
Safeguarding
The safety of the women we work with is non-negotiable. Our recruitment process therefore includes two professional references and a recent criminal background check. The successful candidate will also be expected to comply with AFW's Code of Conduct, safeguarding standards and professional-boundary requirements.
