Ten Years of Work, One Commitment - 2025 Annual Report

In 2025, Action for Women continued to stand alongside refugee and migrant women in Greece at a time when protection systems were becoming harder to access and the gaps between services were growing wider. Across Greece, programmes closed, referral pathways narrowed, and many women were left navigating housing, healthcare, legal systems, and everyday life with fewer places to turn. As specialised services disappeared, AFW found ourselves responding to needs that extended beyond our original scope, for women who had fewer and fewer places to turn.

What we saw again and again was that women rarely arrived with just one need. They came carrying layered realities: precarious housing, barriers to healthcare, language challenges, isolation, and the long process of rebuilding stability after displacement. AFW remained a steady point of access. Through protection casework, safe accommodation, childcare, Greek language education, and psychosocial support, we continued to provide the practical and emotional support that allows women to begin rebuilding their lives.

2025 at a glance

In 2025, we

  • launched LEILA, our coded-entry hotline, in June 2025: A critical first point of access for survivors of sexual and domestic violence seeking immediate safety planning, emotional support, and medical support in multiple languages;

  • responded to 344 requests on our hotline;

  • supported 79 active protection cases;

  • addressed 433 individual casework needs;

  • hosted 17 women and 7 children in our shelter;

  • supported 152 women through Greek language lessons;

  • provided 1:1 psychological support to 35 women;

  • organised 20 women-centred group sessions through Community Fridays;

  • coordinated 181 referrals for medical, legal, housing, and employment support;

  • provided 81 accompaniments (approximately 190 hours) to hospitals, public offices, housing appointments, and legal procedures

Behind these numbers are women rebuilding safety step by step. Our experience continues to show that meaningful support cannot be reduced to one service. Stability comes from practical assistance, emotional care, and community working together.

Ten years of Action for Women

2025 also marked ten years of AFW's work.

Reaching this milestone has made me reflect on what we have learned along the way. Again and again, we see that safety is rarely created by one intervention or one moment of support. It is built slowly, through trust, consistency, and the everyday work of helping women navigate systems that were not designed with them in mind.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of meeting women whose strength is extraordinary, even in the most difficult circumstances. What AFW tries to do is simple: ensure women are not navigating these challenges alone.

Listening to women: shaping the year ahead

At the end of 2025, we asked women in our community what they needed most moving into the year ahead. Their responses were strikingly consistent.

Women highlighted five priorities:

  • practical language learning for daily life and employment;

  • digital skills to navigate increasingly online systems;

  • support accessing healthcare;

  • clearer legal guidance and interpretation;

  • community spaces that foster connection and belonging

These priorities are helping shape how we continue our work in 2026.
